Another finished comic, hooray! This one’s a loving tribute to role playing games with romantic storylines. When playing Mass Effect, did your Shepard end up dying and Garrus was left alone? Or maybe you’ve never even heard of the game, but are in the mood for a romantic encounter with a tall space dinosaur in the afterlife?
Foreword (includes slight spoilers of the Mass Effect games)
I played through the Mass Effect Legendary Edition about three years ago. If you haven’t played it, it’s a role playing game situated in space, where you play as Commander Shepard of SS Normandy, gather a team of skilled fighters and tacticians, and fight robots and weird space creatures, finally saving the whole galaxy. Some diplomacy is needed to gather troops and navigate politics. And, there’s a chance for a romance plot, should you wish to pursue one.
And of course I wanted! My Shepard fell for the Turian companion, Garrus Vakarian. The romance storyline was nice and heart warming, albeit a bit frustrating in places. At the end of the third game, just before the final fight, Garrus says:
”I’m not sure if the Turian heaven is the same as yours. But if this thing goes sideways and we both end up there… meet me at the bar. I’m buying.”
My game ended in Shepard dying and Garrus was left grieving. Well, shit. I don’t know why it annoyed me so (also, didn’t like the all-explaining ending in general), and I decided to write and draw a romantic epilogue, where Shepard and Garrus do meet at a bar, after they’ve both died. But they didn’t die at the same time. And what would the afterlife look like? And there’d have to be a bar…
I have worked on this comic on and off for about three years, and finally it’s ready. Almost everything was done traditionally by hand: design, inks, colouring, lettering. The final editing was done with Krita. The story has been designed ”print-born”, meaning it’s supposed to be read spread by spread. It’s not as good in this digital form but… it’s something. This is the longest comic I’ve done so far. It’s far from perfect, but still a huge step forward for me and I’m so proud of it.
I want to thank all the nice people who have shown their support, given likes and thumbs ups in social media, encouraged me to continue with kind words. You know who you are.
Now, go read!
Update: a missing speech bubble was added to page 11.
